When you need EV recovery in Malta

The most common reasons EV owners call us:

🔸High-voltage battery completely flat — vehicle won't power on at all
🔸12V auxiliary battery failure — touchscreen dead, car won't unlock or start
🔸Charging point fault leaving the car stranded
🔸Charge cable jammed or won't disconnect from vehicle
🔸Crash or collision damage requiring careful flatbed transport
🔸Vehicle stuck in a charging bay, unable to move
🔸EV stuck in an underground or multi-story car park
🔸Cross-island transport between Malta and Gozo
🔸Road accident — battery integrity concern requiring careful handling
🔸Dealer service appointment requiring vehicle delivery

We dispatch a proper tow truck, confirm the price by phone, and load the vehicle with full awareness of the high-voltage system on board.

Why electric vehicles need specialist towing

Electric vehicles cannot be towed the same way as petrol or diesel cars. Doing it wrong creates two distinct risks: mechanical damage to the drivetrain, and electrical damage to the high-voltage battery and motor system.

Here's what changes with EVs:

🔸No traditional neutral — most EVs cannot be put into a freewheeling neutral state when the main battery is depleted. The drive wheels stay locked.
🔸Regenerative braking is always live — turning a drive wheel on the ground (during a wheel-lift tow) can send current back into a damaged motor controller
🔸Dual-motor AWD — Polestar 4, BYD Tang AWD, MG Marvel R, Audi e-tron, BMW iX xDrive: every wheel is a drive wheel. None of them can spin during transit.
🔸High-voltage battery (400V–800V) — physical damage in a tow accident risks thermal runaway in worst cases. The newest 800V-architecture EVs (BYD Han, Zeekr 001, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6) carry even more demanding safety considerations.
🔸Specific lift points — chains or hooks attached to the wrong part of an EV chassis can rupture battery casings or coolant lines

What we do differently for EV recovery:

🔸Flatbed loading with all four wheels off the ground, every time
🔸Four-wheel dollies for tight access where a flatbed can't reach
🔸Never two-wheel lift on an EV — even for short distances
🔸Use of manufacturer-specified tow points only
🔸Awareness of where the high-voltage cabling runs along the chassis floor
🔸No chains, hooks or recovery straps to underbody battery housings
🔸Care with LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) and NMC (Nickel-Manganese-Cobalt) battery chemistries — both are safe when handled correctly, both are dangerous when damaged

If anyone has quoted you "wheel-lift towing without dollies" for an EV, refuse — it's the wrong method.

12V battery — the silent EV breakdown

The single most common EV recovery callout in Malta isn't a flat main battery. It's a flat 12V auxiliary battery.

Every modern EV — BYD, MG, Leapmotor, Tesla, BMW i, Mercedes EQ, Polestar, VW ID — still has a small 12V battery on board. It powers the touchscreen, the door locks, the parking brake release, and the systems that wake the main high-voltage battery.

When the 12V dies:

🔸Doors won't unlock with the key card or fob
🔸Touchscreen won't power on
🔸Parking brake stays engaged
🔸The main battery, no matter how full, can't be accessed
🔸Even brand-new EVs become completely immobile

For these jobs we either provide a 12V power feed to wake the vehicle's systems, or recover the vehicle directly using flatbed loading and four-wheel dollies. If you can't open your EV's doors or your screen is black, this is almost always the cause — call us and we'll bring the right kit.

Chinese EVs in Malta — what's different about them

Chinese EVs now account for a significant share of new EV registrations in Malta, and they bring some specific characteristics worth knowing:

🔸LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) batteries — used by most BYD models, MG ZS EV, and entry-level Tesla Model 3 / Y. LFP chemistry is generally more thermally stable than older NMC packs, but still requires the same towing precautions.
🔸800V architecture — Zeekr 001, BYD Han, and the newest Hyundai/Kia E-GMP platform vehicles operate at higher voltage than older EVs. The towing method doesn't change, but the consequences of doing it wrong are more severe.
🔸Newer service networks — many Chinese brands are still building out their dealer and service infrastructure across Europe. If your local dealer is days away from being able to attend, we can recover your vehicle to whichever service centre or independent EV specialist you choose.
🔸Parking brake release procedures vary — every EV has its own way of releasing the parking brake for towing, and procedures differ between BYD, MG, Leapmotor and traditional brands. We work from the vehicle's own owner's manual where needed, and default to flatbed + four-wheel dollies when the procedure can't be safely completed.

If your dealer's roadside service can't reach you, or your warranty roadside assistance is operating from another country, we're available 24/7 across Malta and Gozo as the local fallback.

Underground parking and EV recovery

EVs in Malta increasingly live in underground charging bays — at home, at work, or at apartment blocks. When the car won't move out of the bay, two specific challenges apply:

🔸Parking brake release — most EVs need the 12V system alive and the touchscreen accessible to disengage the parking brake. If the 12V is dead, no procedure can be completed inside the car.
🔸Height clearance for the recovery truck — most underground bays in Malta have 1.90–2.10m limits, fine for the EV itself but tight for the flatbed truck

In these cases we either:

1. Provide a 12V power feed to wake the vehicle's systems, then complete the manufacturer's tow procedure and dolly the vehicle out
2. Use four-wheel dollies directly to extract the vehicle to ground level, then transfer to flatbed at the entrance

If you're stuck in an underground (St James Capua, MCP Floriana/Valletta, The Point Sliema, Pendergardens, or any apartment block charging bay), call and tell us the location. We'll know what equipment to bring before we dispatch.

EV Towing Malta — Frequently Asked Questions

Can you tow my EV if the battery is completely dead?

Yes. When an EV's main battery is flat — or the 12V auxiliary battery has also died — the vehicle can't be put into its tow mode from inside the car. We then either provide an external 12V power feed to wake the systems, or recover the vehicle directly using a flatbed with all four wheels off the ground, or four-wheel dollies for tight access. The vehicle is never towed with drive wheels on the ground.

My EV won't power on at all and the touchscreen is black — what's wrong?

Almost always a flat 12V auxiliary battery. Every EV has a small 12V battery on board, and when it dies the entire vehicle becomes immobile — even if the main high-voltage battery is full. We carry external 12V boost capability and can either revive the vehicle on-site or recover it without touchscreen access.

Do you tow Chinese EVs like BYD, MG and Leapmotor?

Yes. Chinese EVs make up a growing share of our EV recoveries in Malta. The towing principles are the same across all electric vehicles: flatbed-only, four wheels off the ground, manufacturer tow points, no chains to battery housings. We're familiar with BYD, MG, Leapmotor, Ora, Zeekr and other Chinese brands, and we work from each vehicle's manual where specific procedures are required.

Will towing my EV damage the battery?

Not when done correctly. Super Road Assistance loads every EV with all four wheels off the ground, never attaches chains or hooks to the battery housing or coolant lines, and uses only manufacturer-specified tow points. The risk comes from improper towing methods, not from recovery itself.

Can you tow electric SUVs like BYD Tang, BMW iX or Tesla Model X?

Yes. Electric SUVs are handled with combined EV and 4x4 protocols — flatbed loading, AWD-aware approach, high-voltage system awareness. See also our SUV & 4x4 towing page

How much does EV towing cost in Malta?

Starting rate is €75 within Malta. Underground recovery starts at €90. After-hours, Sunday and public holiday surcharges starting from €50 may apply. The full price is always confirmed by phone before dispatch.

Do you tow EVs to Gozo?

Yes — Malta to Gozo cross-island EV transport starts at €280, including the ferry passage and handling at both ports

My EV is stuck on a public charger and won't disconnect — can you help?

Yes. Stuck charge cables are a common callout. In some cases the cable can be released manually via a procedure inside the boot or rear quarter panel; in others the vehicle needs power restored before the latch will release. We can guide you through the unlock procedure on the phone, or recover the vehicle and cable together if needed.

Do I need a membership or breakdown subscription?

No. Super Road Assistance does not require any membership. You only pay when you actually need EV recovery.
